• Family and Friends: These are the pictures of Chris handing out the school supplies sent to Iraq by family and friends. The man in the blue shirt is his close friend of the last year a District Leader in the area Yousef Ibriham. He is the brother of Col. Yehyeh Ibriham, the leader of the Sons of Iraq and former Infantry Colonel in the old Iraqi Army, who is head of the District Council that governs the area. Together Chris and Yousef arranged the distribution of the school supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks, backpacks, etc) to the various schools. The supplies were distributed in the Doura district which is south of Baghdad. You can see Chris talking to the children and answering questions about where and from whom the supplies came.

Chris went to see Khahil, the National Policeman who was injured by the IED and he is coming along and very thankful for Chris' efforts and the blessings of Allah.

Chris' replacements have arrived, the unit is transitioning over and in a few weeks they will be home.
• This letter was sent to Chris’ father by Chris’ commanding officer, Major Brockway. Chris and a few of his men had a close call when a car containing his Iraqi counterpart was about 40’ from them and it suddenly exploded from a magnetic IED that was attached to the underside of the car.
-----------------------

Sir,
I just wanted to tell you that I could not be more proud of your son, Chris. He is truly a great young officer, and while I am sure you heard about his team’s recent exploits, I wanted to share my perspective with you.

Chris and the boys just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It sounds like the magnetic IED (mounted under the driver’s seat of a car) went off just by dumb luck at the time they were passing. Before the dust had even settled, Chris assumed control of the situation and immediately jumped into action. Realizing that there were wounded Iraqi civilians, he grabbed his combat lifesaver bag and dashed to the scene, accompanied by Mike Cahill, while the rest of his crew assumed a security posture. The most severely wounded man was a Sons of Iraq (SOI) leader whom Chris knew personally, and who had lost most of his leg and was bleeding badly. Chris started rendering first aid, applying a tourniquet to the leg and stopping the bleeding.

While all of this was going on, Alex Restrepo and Tony Martinez helped assess the situation and beef up security. Evidentially, the wounded man’s kids came out and Mike had to make sure they were not exposed to any danger or to the horrific image of their badly injured father. A car was pulled up and whisked the man off to the hospital, but it was assumed that he was going to die.

Because of his quick thinking and control of the scene, evidence from the device was recovered that may lead to the perpetrator. Also, they heard word today that the wounded SOI leader has survived and it looks like he will make it. Chris was elated when he brought that news back to us. At the District Council hall today, the chairman there acknowledged the heroism of Chris and his team, and expressed profound thanks for his lifesaving actions. The value of such an event cannot be overstated in this counterinsurgency environment we are in. Some of these SOI are assumed to be former insurgents, co-opted with jobs and money, but they have vastly improved security in areas in which they operate. For Chris and his boys to show such concern in caring for one of the SOI higher ups may pay dividends that we will never be able to know or quantify.

I first met Chris back in 2004 on FOB Highlander when my team was assigned to his battalion. We met because of our mutual connection to big Josh Lees. At that time, I did not get to know Chris that well, but he reached out to me after he was wounded. After he was back home, he sought me out and wanted to join Civil Affairs because he still wanted to do his part, and because he believed in our mission. It took him a while to get out of the VT Guard, but he persisted and proved to me that he was not all just talk. Since then he has been a productive and energetic part of my company.

After all that Chris has gone through, both his personal injuries and the fact that he lost so many of his close friends, he is an inspiration to me. I have the utmost of faith in him, and I consider him to be the most tactically competent Soldier in my command and a great CA officer.

Tonight, a couple of us were watching episode 7 of Band of Brothers, which is when LT Spears takes command of Easy Company. I could not help but think that Chris is my LT Spears.

Be well and see you soon.

Respectfully,

MAJ Mike Brockway
